Self-Care for Entrepreneurs: Why It’s Critical and How to Do It

Spread the love

As an entrepreneur, you might be tempted to prioritize your work over your health and wellbeing. But if you continue to run yourself ragged without practicing healthy habits and taking moments to destress, how long can you stay successful? And how full do you think your life will be?

Fortunately, it’s possible to foster your health and wellbeing while completing your daily to-do lists and growing your business. All it takes is finding activities that fit into your busy lifestyle and resolving that you will do them consistently. Here are some ideas from Feel Great Wellbeing to get you started on your journey.

Practice Yoga

The life of an entrepreneur can be stressful, overwhelming, and sometimes chaotic. You must take some time to center your mind and relieve tension. Practicing yoga can do just that.

You can cultivate stability, patience, strength, balance, and self-esteem through a regular yoga practice. Whether you’re looking for online or in-person instruction, there’s a class for you that will leave you feeling refreshed.

Destress Your Home

What you see and surround yourself with can directly impact your life. After long hard days at work, your home must remain a safe haven and a restful place. If you notice your home and its people impacted by negative energy (i.e., arguing, complaining, judging, etc.), then take some time to switch the atmosphere.

By decluttering every space in your home, deep cleaning each room, and letting fresh air in through windows and doors, you can completely change the scene. You’d be surprised at how your work life can improve by ensuring your home life is serene and life-giving.

Eat More Nutritiously

Everything you put into your body can either fuel you to push forward or bring you down. While it is okay to splurge now and then on comfort foods and desserts, you will better serve your body by maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.

A daily diet rich in complex carbohydrates, essential vitamins, proteins, healthy fats, antioxidants, minerals, and fiber will keep you energized and able to make wise decisions for your business.

Invest in Time-Saving Tools

As an entrepreneur, your time is valuable. You need to be able to use your time efficiently in order to grow your business. Luckily, there are a number of time-saving tools that can help you get more done in less time. For example, task management apps can help you keep track of your to-do list and prioritize your tasks. Automation tools can help you automate repetitive tasks so that you can focus on more important things.

If you receive an important email, there’s no reason to be fumbling around your inbox searching for it. You can save it as a PDF first so you can access the email even if you don’t have Wi-Fi. A PDF is also a much better option than a screen capture as it’s more secure. Plus, it’s only a few simple steps to make the conversion.

Hydrate All Day

Your body needs to stay hydrated all day to keep up proper energy levels, prevent the mid-day slumps, and boost your metabolism. If you let your body go too long without adequate amounts of water, you may find you suffer from a lack of productivity, brain fog, and decreased memory.

Whether you choose to drink eight cups of water a day or half your body weight in ounces, set a water goal at the beginning of each day and keep track as the day progresses. And if you struggle to drink that much water, you can substitute some of it for water-rich foods, like cucumber, spinach, and watermelon.

Break from Work

Entrepreneurs often view their work as an extension of themselves and their families. It is so intertwined with their identity that business owners often find it hard to shut off work activities. According to the Wellbeing Thesis, constantly being on call and not allowing yourself to step away from thinking about or participating in the business can lead to burnout.

Plan daily breaks throughout the day where you disconnect from everything, stretch, get some fresh air and sunshine, or do something you enjoy. Rejuvenate your spirit and mind annually by planning fun and relaxing vacations.

Make a Plan

If you don’t do so already, start planning your days, weeks, and months ahead of time. Whether you use a paper or digital planner, jot everything down, and you will realize you are a better entrepreneur and see success in every area of your life. You’ll find yourself:

  • Accomplishing more.
  • Finding more inspiration.
  • Achieving more work-life balance.
  • Gaining more time for things you love.
  • Not forgetting as many tasks or meetings.

Entrepreneurs typically give 110% of themselves to their business. While it’s essential to invest in your business, it’s also critical to devote the same amount of dedication to your self-care.
