It is very interesting how often we touch our face – nose, mouth, cheek, ears also neck, hair. This is about self-awareness and it is useful to count how often you actually do this? It is good observing others out of interest.
Whilst waiting at the checkout recently I noticed the person serving at the checkout constantly touching their face and this must have been 5-10 minutes. I did make sure that my phone was only touched by me.
Currently there is an increase in Covid and other respiratory infections. Some infections cannot be identified and appear to result in poor outcomes. This is why it is so important to be aware of hand hygiene when we are out and about.
I have looked at some research and above is a useful diagram with an average number of face touches observed in a 60-minute period.
Some other research watched 31 hours of video material. Touches were usually between 10 and 15 seconds long, meaning participants spent almost 6 hours touching faces.
This should be an essential health promotion message in particular within workplaces, public transport or anywhere there are several people. Attention to hand hygiene should still be a priority for us all to protect each other and feel safe in all environments. We all need to take note and change if it is an issue and be more self-aware.
